background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"vc_custom_heading\">Introduction<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Our<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>daily life<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>gets more and more<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>simplified by smart systems<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>in our houses and<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>advanced technology<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>domestic appliances.<\/p>\n<p>Issues such as energy-saving, low polluting impact, flexibility in programming its use, require an<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>electronic \u201cbrain\u201d<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>in our domestic appliances, which transforms our desires into machine commands.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Washing machines<\/strong>, both at the domestic level and, even more importantly, in the industrial sector,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>contain a PC Board<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>with devices able<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>to variate temperature<\/strong>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>speed of the motor<\/strong>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>quantity of detergent<\/strong>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>cycle duration<\/strong>, etc.<\/p>\n<p>The<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/priatherm.com\/en\/design-your-heatsink-to-operate-with-natural-convection-in-two-easy-steps\/\">heat sink design<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>metal container<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>of the electronic part cannot be left to chance and<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>requires the activity of co-design<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>with<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>thermal management experts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.0&#8243; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"vc_custom_heading\">Application field<\/h2>\n<p>Our customer is a<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>worldwide leader<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>in the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>manufacturing<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>and sales of<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>industrial and domestic appliances<\/strong>. They develop several projects and subassemblies in different countries around the globe, using local expertise and technology.<\/p>\n<p>In the specific case of industrial washing machines, there are<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>different teams<\/strong>, coordinated at a central level,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>that develop a new product<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>from scratch to the final design.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Mechanical engineers<\/em><\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>must study the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>metal structure<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>and the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>engine<\/strong>, in cooperation with electrical engineers. Designers must<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>create the external \u201cenvelop\u201d<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>to satisfy certain aesthetical criteria, but think about the interface between the machine and the user, who must find it easy and friendly.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Electronic engineers<\/em><\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>develop the main<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>PC Board<\/strong>, where many components in the circuit take control of the machine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>ask thermal experts to co-design the heatsink<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>that will<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>remove the heat in excess<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>from the core of the board to the outside. The heatsink<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>must be cheap<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>because\u00a0the White Market has medium-high volume and big competition on prices.<\/p>\n<p>A well-designed heatsink is<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>not only used for cooling<\/strong>, it is used as<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>mechanical support<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>for the main box containing the electronic part, too.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; admin_label=&#8221;section&#8221; module_id=&#8221;the-challenge&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_row admin_label=&#8221;row&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.0&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.4&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"vc_custom_heading\">The challenge<\/h2>\n<p>The<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>difficulty<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>of this project was related to<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>mechanical<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>more than<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>thermal design<\/strong>. The customer needed a<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>U-shaped extruded section<\/strong>, with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fins on the sides to cool the heat<\/li>\n<li>Grooves in the open-top part and channels on the edges, to screw a metal cover<\/li>\n<li>Slots on the two lateral sides, to be able to place the PCB<\/li>\n<li>PT Click fins, to assembly TO220 components with stainless steel clips<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>extruded heatsink<\/strong>, together with its main function of cooler, had to be<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>developed<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>in a way<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>to create several supports<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>to the mechanical assembly.<\/p>\n<p>The<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>challenge<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>was to<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>design the section<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>wished by the customer<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>respecting<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>feasibility rules for geometry<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>(150 x 250 mm) and<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>dimensional tolerances<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>(\u00b1 1,25 mm), coming from the Extruders world.<\/p>\n<p>A U-shaped extrusion, for example, tends to be deformed on top, making it difficult to respect a fixed distance between the two sides, where we wanted to insert the PCB without any risk.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"vc_custom_heading\">Solution<\/h2>\n<p>The Priatherm team collected all the input data from the customer,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>asking several questions<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>related to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the application<\/li>\n<li>the environmental<\/li>\n<li>the boundary conditions (the better the problem is known, the more accurate will the solution be)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After they selected the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>extrusion technology of aluminum alloy<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>(EN AW 6060 T5) as the most suitable<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/priatherm.com\/en\/technologies-for-heat-sink-manufacturing\/\">heatsink manufacturing process<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>for this case, the engineers chose the best supplier for this extrusion tool.<\/p>\n<p>It was evident that the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>main issue was to put all the mechanical requirements together<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>in the same section, with complex geometry and demanding tolerances.<\/p>\n<p>The<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>co-design with experts of the extrusion process<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>was key, to be added to Priatherm\u2019s experience in cooling and the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/priatherm.com\/en\/heat-sink-with-clips-simple-element-many-advantages\/\">PT Click fixing system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The idea to<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>integrate fixing points<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>for screws and<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>PT Click fins<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>for the clips\u2019 assembly proved to be a<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>smart solution<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>to avoid further machining on the heatsink with an obvious<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>save of manufacturing costs<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.0&#8243; They develop several projects and subassemblies in different countries around the globe, using local expertise and technology.<\/p><p>In the specific case of industrial washing machines, there are <strong>different teams<\/strong>, coordinated at a central level, <strong>that develop a new product<\/strong> from scratch to the final design.<\/p><ul><li><strong><em>Mechanical engineers<\/em><\/strong> must study the <strong>metal structure<\/strong> and the <strong>engine<\/strong>, in cooperation with electrical engineers. Designers must <strong>create the external \u201cenvelop\u201d<\/strong> to satisfy certain aesthetical criteria, but think about the interface between the machine and the user, who must find it easy and friendly.<\/li><li><strong><em>Electronic engineers<\/em><\/strong> develop the main <strong>PC Board<\/strong>, where many components in the circuit take control of the machine.<\/li><\/ul><p>They <strong>ask thermal experts to co-design the heatsink<\/strong> that will <strong>remove the heat in excess<\/strong> from the core of the board to the outside. The heatsink <strong>must be cheap <\/strong>because\u00a0the White Market has medium-high volume and big competition on prices.<\/p><p>A well-designed heatsink is <strong>not only used for cooling<\/strong>, it is used as <strong>mechanical support<\/strong> for the main box containing the electronic part, too.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][vc_column width=\"1\/3\"][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_id=\"challenge\"][vc_column width=\"2\/3\"][vc_row_inner css=\".vc_custom_1610721468120{background-color: #ef8a05 !important;}\"][vc_column_inner][vc_custom_heading text=\"The challenge\" font_container=\"tag:h1|text_align:center|color:%23ffffff\" use_theme_fonts=\"yes\"][vc_empty_space height=\"45px\"][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner css=\".vc_custom_1610727913057{background-color: #ffffff !important;}\"][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text font_weight=\"fw-500\"]The <strong>difficulty<\/strong> of this project was related to <strong>mechanical<\/strong> more than <strong>thermal design<\/strong>.
