_builder_version=&#8221;4.19.4&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"vc_custom_heading\">Application field<\/h2>\n<div>The<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>complexity<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>of railways vehicles is pretty high, having they:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>motors<\/li>\n<li>batteries<\/li>\n<li>compressors<\/li>\n<li>fans<\/li>\n<li>circuit breakers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Electrical energy<\/strong>, coming from the main overhead line, \u201c<strong>enters<\/strong>\u201d the system and needs rectifiers and inverters to be properly<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>managed<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>transformed<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>to let devices work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>Priatherm\u2019s<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>customer designs the inverter<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>for the auxiliary system onboard the train and metro.<\/div>\n<div>The<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>specifications<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>are<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>demanding<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>because on the one hand there is<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>much power<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>to be<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>dissipated<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>(e.g. 6 kW) in order to<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>guarantee<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>a<strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>long working life<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>of the electronic devices; but, on the other hand,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>boundary conditions<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>are<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>challenging<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>(T ambient from -30 \u00b0C to 60\u00b0C, weight constraints, space limitations for heatsink, shock &amp; vibration specs., salt fog).<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>heatsink<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>is used in cooling electronic devices, to<strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>create<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>a<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>mechanical structure<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>for many other smaller elements and to secure the electronic \u201cheart\u201d of the machine to the complete system in movement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>In the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>design stage<\/strong>, many parameters have to be considered in parallel to optimize the solution and<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>satisfy<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>all safety and reliability<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>requirements<\/strong>.<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.4&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"vc_custom_heading\">The challenge<\/h2>\n<p>In this specific case, the customer needed a<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/priatherm.com\/en\/portfolio\/pt-high-2\/\">big heatsink<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>to sustain a metal box to be installed<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>on top of the roof<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>of the vehicle: base plate dimensions were approx.<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>500 x 900 mm<\/strong>. The space available for the cooling fins was max. 120 mm.<\/p>\n<p>Since the requested<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Rth<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>was<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>lower than 6,5 \u00b0C\/kW<\/strong>, with<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/priatherm.com\/it\/design-your-cooling-system-using-forced-convection-in-just-three-easy-steps\/\">forced convection cooling<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>given by axial fans, the fins pack had to be studied, reaching the following optimum: fins thickness 2 mm, height 90 mm, pitch 6 mm, for a total of 74 fins.<\/p>\n<p>Another important input data was that the customer needed a<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>free frame of 50 mm<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>width all around the fins in order to implement a sealing element during the assembly of the heatsink to the main box, able to protect the inside electronics from external agents.<\/p>\n<p>Last point: the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>surface<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>of the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>fins<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>had to be<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>resistant<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>to the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>aggression<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>corrosion<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>of salty air coming from the external environment.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.4&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"vc_custom_heading\">Solution<\/h2>\n<div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid vc_custom_1610727913057 vc_row-has-fill\">\n<div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\">\n<div class=\"vc_column-inner\">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  fw-500\">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div>After receiving the technical specifications from the customer and having deeply clarified them clause by clause, our engineers started the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>first steps<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>of thermal simulation.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The goal was to select the proper<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/priatherm.com\/it\/technologies-for-heat-sink-manufacturing\/\">heat sink manufacturing<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>process to satisfy thermal requirements.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/priatherm.com\/en\/portfolio\/pt-sink\/\">Extruded aluminum heat sinks<\/a>, the first solution analyzed, were<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>not able to solve the problem<\/strong>, not only for dimensional limitations (partially resolvable with double or triple welding of different \u201cpieces\u201d) but for the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>impossibility to create fins 90 mm high with a pitch of 4-8 mm<\/strong>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/priatherm.com\/it\/metal-joint-by-brazing-how-it-works\/\">Brazing technology<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>was identified as<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>the best one<\/strong>!<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Fins<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>of pure aluminum (best thermal conductivity available) were<strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>brazed onto a base<\/strong>, made by two extrusion 250 mm wide,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>joined<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>to create a unique base 500 mm wide.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>By<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>one<\/strong>:<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>assembly operation step<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<\/li>\n<li>a<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>single cycle<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>in the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>brazing oven<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div>it was possible to make a metal joint (top thermal and mechanical performance!)<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>between the two bases<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>and amongst them<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>to all the fins<\/strong>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Levering on the fact that<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>fins were brazed<\/strong>, we designed the width and length of the fins pack in order to leave the needed 50 mm wide free frame for sealing material.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>With<strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>this solution<\/strong>, we have<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>reduced the material content<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>eliminated<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>any<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>further milling<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>to remove unnecessary fins. Our<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>competitors<\/strong>, that<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>offer<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>mechanical pressed fins<\/strong>, meet the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>difficulty to obtain \u201c3D\u201d<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>design<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>of the fins and must use more material which needs to be later removed with CNC,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>increasing<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>costs<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>and quality issues.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>After<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>sandblasting<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>CNC phases<\/strong>, the heatsink was moved to the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/priatherm.com\/it\/the-anodization-of-a-heat-sink\/\">Surtec 650 surface treatment<\/a>, which added the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>required protection<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>to the aluminum against corrosion.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243;
